Is a loader that useful of a tool that it would make sense to get it now? I could splurge and add a 420 or 430 to the 4400 I'll pick up Saturday. What kind of cost am I looking at? My tractor already comes with the dual VSC.

Loaders are expensive - especially if you don't particularly need one! New loaders tend to be $3000 or more. The 430 costs between $400 and $600 more than the 420, but worth it - I think (I've used both). The 430 doesn't lift much more weight, but reaches nearly 1 foot higher, seems to operate much more smoothly, and - at least for the ones I've used - goes on and off easier.Only you can determine what you need - snow removal, digging in the dirt, pulling fenceposts, hoisting shingles up on a roof, etc., etc. I'd also suggest that you should decide what size bucket you want too, maybe a 5' for digging, 6' for mostly snow removal, etc. ....

I bought one with my 4200 because I had a lot of dirt to smooth, move around, etc. Now that's done and I'm still using it every week. Yesterday I used it to help stand up one side of a fort I'm building for my son. I seldom disconnect it. Could not live without it now. If you ever move a wheelbarrow's worth of dirt, it's nice to have. I believe few people part with their loaders, except to buy a new one. My old quotes from 6-months back give a price of $2500 for 420 loader and $625 for the valving. ....

I purchased a JD 4400 with a 430 loader about a month ago. The loader was quoted at $2900. I'm glad I splurged, I really love mine. ....

I got the 420 loader with my 4300 along with a backhoe, tiller, mower and box scraper. I figured I had better go for everything while my wife was willing. I was not sure about all the uses that I would put the loader to when I was buying it. But have found plenty of uses since. I had a pole shed built and had to level the land on a hillside - in some places I had to take it down three feet - no problem. We are building a house on the property and will be building retaining walls, moving large rocks, hauling gravel and so on. I have found it very easy to use, especially for a novice like myself. And easy to put on and take off. 5 minutes each way the first time. ....
